Before I got married my mother used to tell me to have respect for my husband. Don’t let him wash dishes or his own clothes. She told me not to wash my husband’s clothes with mine, to keep his separate. Also she said you’re not supposed to wash kids’ clothes with grownups’ clothes because kids wet the bed. You’re not supposed to mix pillow cases or sheets with the clothes, and you have to wash dish cloths and towels separate from the clothing. If you mix them it brings you bad luck. You’re not even supposed to wash your face in the dish pan. You have your wash basin separate from what you wash your face in, and when you spill the water out, you don’t spill face water where you spill the dish water. If you spill the face water in the pail for the dirty dish water it will cloud your eyes and you can’t see clearly. My dad told all of us not to eat too much shellfish or drink too much water. It brings you bad luck, he said; you become poor.
